Quotation (verbatim): Tarian y Gweithiwr, 15 Dec 1887, p.1 (obituary of Daniel Thomas of Penylan): “Bu yn gontractor am flynyddoedd o dan Arglwydd Bute, ac yn berchenog ar odynau calch gwerthfawr yn Llandough.” (He was for years a contractor under Lord Bute, and owner of valuable lime kilns at Llandough.) South Wales Daily News, 24 Apr 1888, p.3: “William Birch, engaged as a labourer at Llandough Quarry”. Kelly’s 1895, Part 1, p.392, Llandough (Penarth): “Llandough Lime Works (D. Thomas & Son, proprietors)” and “Williams John, farmer”. Evening Express, 12 May 1909, p.3: “employed by Mr. William Turner, contractor, of Llandough, fell 35 feet whilst working at the quarry”. NLW Bute D153/4–8 catalogue: “land (33 a.), formerly part of Great House Farm, for the Llandough Limeworks (33 a.), 1876-1912”.

Fits with: Daniel Thomas held lime kilns at Llandough and worked under Bute, which fits the 1877 Bute–Daniel Thomas agreement (EV-0006). The 1915 OS shows “Llandough Lime Works” with an engine house and siding directly north-west of “Ty-mawr” and the church; the 1947 revision shows “Limekiln Cottage” and “Old Quarry”, so the works had stopped by 1947. The 1895 directory lists the lime works and “Williams John, farmer” side by side: the works and the farm were separate holdings by then.

Cuts against: No document seen dates the end of the works to 1928; the 1938 sheet still labels the works (OS labels lag). By 1909 the quarry employer was Turner, not Thomas, and which quarry the 1909 item means is not stated. D153 gives 33 acres; the 1877 account gives about 10 acres for the house parcel: the acreages differ.

Notes: OS sheets viewed, not downloaded. The 1927 obituary of Alfred Thomas (Lord Pontypridd) on cynonculture.co.uk (“in 1851 he [Daniel Thomas] started the lime-works at Llandough … carried on by his son, who gave it up”) is secondary and its original paper is unnamed: UNVERIFIED.

Further items (decade sweep, 21 Oct 2026): Evening Express, 31 May 1905, p.2: “The lime-kilns at Llandough is evidently a favourite night haunt for tramps, for the police are continually engaged in clearing them away” (WNO); Evening Express, 4 Jan 1905: five seamen “found sleeping in a lime kiln” at Llandough (WNO); Evening Express, 4 Dec 1906, p.3: an unknown man “found in an unconscious state near the Llandough Limekilns” died of the fumes (WNO); earlier, Evening Express, 18 Oct 1895, p.3: “three men … precipitated into a quarry” at Llandough Quarry (WNO). Warm kilns used as shelter point to working kilns in 1905–06.
