Quotation (verbatim): “Born 16 September 1840, at Llwyn-y-grant, Pen-y-lan, Cardiff, son of Daniel Thomas, contractor … He died, unmarried, 14 December 1927.” (DWB). “The Bulk of his Estate, Left Unconditionally to the Corporation … The unofficial report is that the bulk of his property, has been, left unconditionally to the corporation, and citizens” (27 Dec 1927, as transcribed). “in 1851 he [Daniel Thomas] started the lime-works at Llandough, which was carried on by his son, who gave it up” (1927 obituary, as transcribed).
Fits with: What most likely happened in 1928: Mary (Nancy) Williams’s statement puts the last rent for the house parcel, about £4, as paid to Alfred Thomas in 1928, when the quarry machinery left (EV-0016). Alfred Thomas died, unmarried, on 14 December 1927. The rent most likely stopped because the person it was paid to had died. Any Thomas interest at Llandough then passed under his will; if the report is right, much of his estate went to Cardiff Corporation, the body named in the 29 March 1961 deed.
Cuts against: The estate report is “unofficial” in its own words and comes through a secondary transcription; the original newspaper is not named. Nothing seen yet shows that his estate included land at Llandough.
Notes: Proof route (read-only sweep, nothing ordered): the 1928 Calendar of Grants entry for “Thomas, Alfred, Baron Pontypridd”, his will, Glamorgan Archives Lord Pontypridd papers, and Cardiff Corporation minutes for 1928.
