Quotation (verbatim): The Brickworks of Wales — South Glamorgan, “Llandough – ST 1666 7362”: “Llandough Limeworks were owned in 1871 by D Thomas and Son and the brickworks had been opened next door by 1899. J E Billups of Billups Brick Co Ltd was the proprietor, becoming the Llandough Brick Co by 1923. The limeworks had gone and the brickworks is marked ‘disused’ by 1947.” South Wales Daily News, 26 Nov 1896, p.6, “DEATH OF MR J. E. BILLUPS, CARDIFF”: “We regret to announca the death of Mr Jonathan Edwin Billups … Among other concerns with which he was connected were the Penarth Brickworks, which were started by him.” penarth-dock.org.uk (secondary) quotes Kelly’s 1895 under Brick & Tile Makers: “Billups J. E. Llandough, Cardiff”.

Fits with: D. Thomas & Son as proprietors fits Kelly’s 1895, “Llandough Lime Works (D. Thomas & Son, proprietors)” (EV-0280). “Disused” by 1947 fits the 1947 OS revision in EV-0280.

Cuts against: The secondary page gives “by 1899” and “by 1923” (dates by which the works existed), not opening dates. J. E. Billups died in November 1896, so he did not open a brickworks in 1899; the 1895 directory entry (secondary quotation) places him at Llandough before that. The obituary names “the Penarth Brickworks”, not Llandough. No source seen names a Bute lease to D. Thomas & Son in 1871, names Daniel and Alfred Thomas as the partners, or dates the end of lime burning to c.1928.

Notes: The 1871 ownership and the 1923 company name rest on the secondary page alone until its directory or map source is found.
