Location / town-name variants#

  • Llandough-juxta-Penarth — preferred historical locator for this project.

  • Llandough near Penarth — modern descriptive locator.

  • Llandough near Cardiff — modern descriptive locator used to distinguish this site from other Llandoughs.

  • Llandough, Penarth — modern search/location form.

  • Llandough, Cardiff — modern search/location form appearing in archaeological/location contexts.

  • Landoche-juxta-Cardif — historical spelling found in Cardiff Records for the manor of Llandough; it is retained as a historical locator variant, not as proof that every tenement in that record was Great House.

  • Llandough / Leckwith — neighbouring parish/manorial context, not an alternative name for Great House Farm.

1881 census — reported address and farm-name variants#

Source-reported wording; census image not yet verified here. The current research note reports that the 1881 census records the address as “Llandough Home Farm” (transcribed in the voice note as “Land Doc Home Farm”) and appears to list the farm name as “R-W-S-S Farm” / “Reese’s Farm”. Preserve these as competing transcriptions until the original census schedule or a reliable image is checked. Do not treat either wording alone as proof of a formal name change, ownership, or identity with another farm.

Evidence entry: EV-0223 — 1881 census: reported Llandough Home Farm / R-W-S-S Farm wording.

Census image checked (19 Oct 2026): Sion Buckler’s photograph of RG11/5288 p.2 reads “Llandough Home Farm” (schedule 9, John Williams); “R-W-S-S” does not appear on that page (EV-0224). Per Sion Buckler, Llandough Home Farm is Great House Farm; see also EV-0225 and Name & Location Variations.

Source-specific term — Church Farm#

Church Farm / Llandough Church Farm is not an established alias of Great House Farm / Tŷ Mawr. The wording comes from Amgueddfa Cymru’s 63.24 provenance for objects said to have been found about 1858 and from the 1931 letter. Those sources do not themselves identify the farm as Great House Farm. The fact that Great House Farm stands beside St Dochdwy’s Church is not enough to equate every historical “Church Farm” reference with it. The exact identity of the 1858 findspot remains unresolved pending a primary plan, deed, estate record or other independent identifier. 🕒

Llandough Farm (opposite hospital) is separate. It is a different farmstead in the same Llandough near Penarth/Cardiff locality, not an alias, former name, subdivision or nomenclature variant of Great House Farm / Tŷ Mawr.

Location identifiers#

  • Heneb/GGAT HER: GGAT02038s — Great House Farm.

  • RCAHMW/NPRN: NPRN 20182 — Great House Farm.

  • Grid references: ST16707335; ST1681 7331. The Wiki uses ST16707335 as the primary identity control.

  • Later development address: Church View Close, CF64 2NN.

How the selector works#

Across the Wiki, a historical locator should remain visibly faithful to its citation. The selector is therefore a location resolver, not a rewriting device: the cited locator is the default label; selecting another reel item leads to this nomenclature page and its exact anchor. The building/property-name selector is maintained separately.

Disambiguation#

This page concerns the Llandough-juxta-Penarth site beside St Dochdwy’s Church, around ST16707335 / NPRN 20182. Do not merge it with the separately evidenced Llandough Farm, Llandough near Cowbridge, Llandough Castle, St Mary Church, or Penrice/Margam records for the different “Manors of Llandough and St Mary Church” locality unless a document independently proves a connection.

Similar names are research leads and do not, by themselves, prove identical boundaries, ownership or title.
